History

The Saarländisches Künstlerhaus was founded by the Saarland State Government in 1985 to promote communication and collaboration among artists, writers and craftspeople, who live or work in Luxemburg, Lothringen, Rheinland-Pfalz and Saarland. For several years, the Künstlerhaus moved among temporary locations, using available studio spaces in Schenkelberg and Saarbrücken.

The Künstlerhaus has been housed in the Riotte-Haus, Karlstraße, Saarbrücken, since 1992. This Baroque Villa was provided to the Künstlerhaus by the Saarland Cultural Foundation, and is named for a former mayor of Saarbrücken.
